Jeffrey Service

Jeffrey was born in 1946 in Brisbane, Australia. As a young adult he went out to explore the world. In 1968 he hitch-hiked from Iceland to Morocco and New York to Panama. He married on the Navaho Indian Reservation and paddled down the Rio de la Passion in the Guatemalan jungle in a dug-out canoe.

Jeffrey started his painting career in 1969 when he arrived in a hippie commune in California, chasing The Summer Of Love. Broke in Berkeley in 1970, he started selling his brightly coloured batik paintings and this turned into a professional twenty year obsession.

He was in New Mexico in 1971 and Santa Fe from 1975 to 1980, where he did a two year residency at the Santa Domingo Indian reservation which was sponsored by the New Mexico Arts Commission. One of Jeffrey’s works is in the Library of Congress, Washington DC.

Jeffrey was invited to captain the British Croquet Team and at the DH Lawrence Festival the guests included Robert Redford and Elizabeth Taylor. He now has two works in Elizabeth Taylor’s private collection.

Upon returning to Australia in 1973 he built a Balinese style artist’s retreat at Tamborine in Queensland. Jeffrey now paints in water colour, continuing with his familiar bright style.

“I paint about the ironic comedy in my life”.
