Greg Postle

Greg Postle 26th May - 30th June, 2017

Greg was born in 1958 and grew up on a cattle property in Central Queensland. His mother encouraged art in the house and he left the station when he was fifteen years old to venture out on his own. He turned his hand to a variety of jobs and without any formal training began his painting career at the age of twenty-seven.

In his paintings Greg captures the essence of the birds while still maintaining accuracy of the species in his depiction. Greg is drawn to remote areas of Australia’s outback where there is stark contrast between the wet and dry seasons, harsh landscapes and beautiful birds. He studies all the wildlife, taking numerous photographs and then paints his interpretations.

He is recognised as one of Australia’s leading and most celebrated bird painters, Greg is renowned for his exquisite technique and an eye for immaculate detail. He is consistently able to instil an intangible quality into his work, which many believe has elevated him into the realm of master bird painter. With numerous sell-out exhibitions, Greg’s paintings continue to attract the attention of both Australian and international investors. His work has been selected for five consecutive years for the internationally acclaimed ‘Birds in Art’ exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in the USA. Greg’s work is held in private art collections around the world.

The harsh and remote natural environs of Australia provide some of the most spectacular visual imagery on the planet. I like to dedicate as much time as possible immersing myself into that space. Spending long periods of time in these remote and powerful landscapes with the exquisite birdlife and observing the elements at work, reveals to me the essence required to put together the images I create.

Fire. It can be profound and unsettling, bringing with it prolific life and beauty. It is an element I am becoming increasingly familiar with, using it in my work with great enthusiasm. Water, another component of my art for which I have a strong fascination. When it flows through the great flood plains of the outback, it brings with it abundant animal and bird life from all around the country.
These adventures always stir the emotions leaving me with a feeling of awe and a great respect for nature. They present me with an enriched awareness and endless visual memories, generating the passion and intention to bring these ideas to life on a canvas.

My creations represent what I see to be regular and mostly unobserved events happening throughout wild Australia. Very rarely will a painting show an image that I have actually seen; it will show the story I have created from my experiences within these moments of immersion in nature. This is my story telling.
I see my art as a visual documentation of the elements in our natural world, a world that may not be available to some of us, or our children, in the future.
